Fitting

Hose nipple / adapter fitting — a connecting part for hose, pipe and equipment

A штуцер (hose nipple / adapter fitting) is a short fitting that connects a flexible hose, tube or hose tail to a pipeline, tap, pump, tank or equipment body. In a typical design one end has a pipe thread and the other has a barbed hose tail, a plain weld end or another connection type. The part works as a transition between a rigid network and a flexible or dissimilar connection.

A reliable joint is obtained when not only the “inch” size matches, but also the thread form, the hose inside diameter, the material and the service conditions. Exact ratings depend on the manufacturer, size and version and must be checked against the datasheet of the specific item.

Types used in piping systems

Common versions in this product group include:

  • Hose nipple (“barb”, “hose tail”) — thread on one side and a ribbed tail on the other. The ribs hold the hose; a clamp secures it from outside.
  • Male or female threaded adapter — external or internal pipe thread for a tap, coupling, pump or manifold.
  • Straight and elbow versions — in-line or angled connection where the run changes direction at the equipment.
  • Reducing adapter — different thread and hose sizes in one part.
  • Weld-on stub — a plain end for welding to a pipe, vessel or nozzle.
  • Tank bulkhead fitting — a pass-through for a tank wall with a seal and locknut.
  • Union-nut version — a demountable joint for pumps, filters and instruments.

Do not confuse this fitting with a barrel nipple. A barrel nipple or hex nipple has external thread on both ends and joins two internal threads. A hose nipple combines thread with another connection type — most often a barbed tail.

Materials

Several materials are used for such systems. The choice depends on the medium, temperature, pressure and corrosion risk.

  • Brass — a common option for water, irrigation and domestic plumbing.
  • Carbon steel and galvanized steel — for technical and industrial lines that need mechanical strength.
  • Stainless steel — for more aggressive service and circuits with higher corrosion requirements.
  • Polymer versions — for irrigation, tanks and moderate-pressure systems where metal is not required.

There is no universal material: a garden-hose nipple and a fitting at a pump set are selected by different criteria.

Sizes and compatibility

Selection is based on several parameters at once:

  1. Nominal thread size: common sizes are 1/2″, 3/4″, 1″, 1¼″, 1½″, 2″ (about DN15–DN50).
  2. Thread type: male or female; parallel or taper; ISO 228 / BSPP or ISO 7 / BSPT.
  3. Hose inside diameter, not only the inch thread mark.
  4. Tail length and whether a hex is provided for a wrench.
  5. Service medium: water, air or a technical fluid.
  6. Pressure and temperature of the joint.
  7. Hose retention method: clamp, crimp sleeve or quick coupling.

The inch thread designation is not equal to the hose ID in millimetres. For a tight joint the hose must sit firmly on the tail without tearing the wall and without play.

Applications

These fittings are used where a rigid pipe must be joined to a flexible hose or to equipment:

  • cold and hot water supply;
  • irrigation, pump sets and pressure tanks;
  • drain and discharge lines of strainers;
  • compressor and pneumatic lines;
  • connection of tanks and vessels;
  • instrument take-off points;
  • auxiliary industrial circuits.

Gas, steam, aggressive and food media require only versions allowed by the project and the product datasheet.

How to select the right fitting

  1. Define what you connect: hose, pipe, tank or pump port.
  2. Identify the thread type and size on the equipment.
  3. Measure the hose inside diameter.
  4. Choose the material for water, air or technical service.
  5. Decide whether a straight, elbow or reducing body is needed.
  6. Agree the thread seal and hose clamp method.
  7. Match pressure and temperature to the product datasheet.

Typical mistakes: choosing by the look of the hose only; mixing BSPP and BSPT; fitting a thin tail into a thick-wall hose; tightening the clamp unevenly on the barbs.

Installation

Depressurize and isolate the system. Clean the thread. For parallel thread use hemp with paste, PTFE tape or an anaerobic sealant according to the manufacturer and the medium. Push the hose fully onto the tail and tighten the clamp on the ribbed section.

Then test the joint at working pressure. Leakage is more often caused by a mismatched thread, a wrong hose size or a misplaced clamp than by “insufficient torque”.

How to order from Pipeline Systems of Ukraine

To buy a hose nipple / adapter or to order a batch for a project, tell a PipelineSystems specialist the duty of the joint, thread size and type, hose ID, material, medium, temperature, pressure and quantity.

The price and the cost of a complete set depend on size, material, version and order volume. For installation it is practical to select the fitting together with clamps, couplings, nipples, locknuts and sealing materials as one compatible assembly. Availability and delivery should be confirmed for the specific item.

FAQ

How is this fitting different from a barrel nipple?
A barrel nipple has external thread on both ends. A hose nipple combines thread with a hose tail, weld end or another connection type.

How do I match it to a hose?
Use the hose inside diameter and the tail profile. The fit must be tight; the clamp provides retention.

Which material is suitable for water?
Brass is often used for ordinary water and irrigation. Stainless steel is considered for more demanding corrosion conditions. The final choice follows the datasheet and site conditions.

Can it be used on a pump set?
Yes, if the thread, pressure rating and material match the pump port and the hose.

Why does the joint leak?
Usually the thread does not match, the hose size is wrong or the clamp is offset. Do not solve this by over-tightening.

Is wholesale ordering possible?
Yes. For bulk supply agree size, material, quantity and companion fittings.
