Nipples

A pipe nipple is a threaded fitting with male pipe thread on both ends. It is used where two female-threaded parts must be joined tightly: a coupling and a valve, a filter and a meter, or a valve and an adapter. In everyday use the same part is often called a barrel nipple.

This product group commonly includes equal nipples (the same diameter on both sides) and reducing nipples for joining different sizes. The body may have a hex for a wrench or the shape of a short pipe section. Brass and nickel-plated nipples are typically used in water and heating systems; steel and stainless-steel versions are used in more demanding media and industrial lines. A nipple is not a substitute for a union tailpiece (sgon): the latter has one longer thread and works with a coupling and locknut as a serviceable joint.

When selecting a nipple, consider thread size (inches or DN), thread type, material, coating, medium, pressure and temperature. Exact ratings depend on the manufacturer, size and design and must be checked against the datasheet of the specific item. Seal the joint with PTFE tape, thread seal cord or anaerobic sealant — without overtightening, so the threads are not damaged.
